About this archive
This site is an independent archive of the teachings of Kyabje Khensur Kangyurwa Lobsang Thubten Rinpoche (1925-2014), published by Ask Buddhism. It is not an official website of the Tibetan Buddhist Institute (TBI). We are grateful to TBI for preserving Rinpoche’s teachings.
Where the recordings come from
The recordings come from the collections of the Tibetan Buddhist Institute and Buddha House in Adelaide. The audio files are kept on the Internet Archive and on Ask Buddhism, and this site plays them from there. No copies of the audio are stored on this site.
The transcripts come from Ask Buddhism (askbuddhism.com). Each recording page links to its source.
Editorial policy
- Recordings are presented as they were made. The audio is not cut or edited.
- Titles, dates and places come from the original recording labels, and are corrected when better information is found.
- When a date is not known, the recording is marked Undated. Dates are never guessed.
- Every teaching has an ID in the form KR-nnnn, and every recording in the form KR-nnnn.nn. IDs are never reused. If a recording moves to another teaching, it gets a new ID, and the old ID redirects to its new page, so citations stay valid.
- Corrections to transcripts are made at the source and then brought into this archive.
Transcript labels
Each transcript carries a label that shows how far it has been reviewed.
- Raw: speech recognition output that has not been corrected.
- Corrected: speech recognition output corrected with AI against a glossary of Buddhist terms. Not yet checked by a person.
- Checked: read through by a person while listening to the recording.
- Edited: edited by a person for readability. The wording may differ slightly from the recording.
- Approved: reviewed and approved by the archive’s editors.
Recordings whose transcript is still Raw are not offered to search engines until the transcript is corrected.
Restricted teachings
Some of Rinpoche’s teachings are on tantric practice. By tradition these are given only to students who have received the relevant empowerment, so they are not published on this site. The Teachings pages list such series by name, years and number of sessions only, so that students know they exist. Access for students with the relevant empowerment is planned for a later stage.
How to cite
Every recording page ends with a citation you can copy. It gives Rinpoche’s name, the title of the recording, the place if known, the date (or “undated”), the recording ID with its transcript label, and the page address. For example:
Kyabje Khensur Kangyurwa Rinpoche, title of the recording, place, date, KR-nnnn.nn (transcript: corrected), https://khensurrinpoche.org/teachings/…
Please always include the recording ID. A citation with the ID keeps working even if a title or page address changes later.
Supporting this work
If these teachings are of benefit, please consider supporting the Tibetan Buddhist Institute in Adelaide, which Rinpoche founded in 2005.
Use of this material
Copyright in the recordings and transcripts remains with their owners. You are welcome to quote short passages for study and teaching, with a citation. Please ask Ask Buddhism before republishing whole recordings or transcripts.
